"The Kitchen Table Conversations model creates the means to give people
voice in ways that are constructive, respectful and genuinely inclusive—all
vital in any issue of social or cultural change. It’s no mistake that this model
originated with the Trust and resonates with women. It directly challenges
the adversarial and dysfunctional nature of so much of our political culture.
We are delighted to see it mushrooming now." - Mary Crooks AO, Executive Director of the Victorian Women’s Trust

The Victorian Women’s Trust is pleased to announce the publication of the
essential guide to its Kitchen Table Conversations (KTC) model for
democratic engagement, devised and applied by the VWT over the past
twenty years, and now being popularised by the ‘Voices of’ movement.

VWT first designed the model as the centrepiece of The Purple Sage
Project. Since then, the Trust has applied and further developed the model
in many ways, most notably in the civi engagement process adopted by
Voices for Indi, which led to a successful campaign to elect independent
Cathy McGowan to federal parliament in 2013.

Kitchen Table Conversations: A guide for sustaining our democratic culture includes:

  • A history of the Kitchen Table Conversations model, as told by Mary Crooks AO and Alana Johnson AM, Chair of the Board of the Victorian Women’s Trust
  • An overview of the practical steps required to successfully run the model
  • Eight key steps for running the KTC
  • Templates for use at community meetings

Each book supports the work of the Victorian Women’s Trust, Australia’s leading gender equality advocate.
